National City makes plans for annual memorial

The city of National City is hosting its second annual Memorial Day ceremony at 4 p.m. on May 30 at the War Memorial and Veterans Wall of Honor on 12th Street in National City.
The holiday honors those who have died in war and a commemorative wreath will be presented at the event.

Mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis and other elected officials will be speaking at the event as well as Gold Star Family Memorial Monument, Woody Williams Foundation Honorary Board member Dave Myers.

Sweetwater High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps instructor Adrian Gutierrez said the school’s JROTC group will also be participating on Memorial Day.

“One of the missions of the JROTC program is to instill patriotism into students. Including them on Memorial day, a special day of remembrance, helps them understand the ultimate sacrifice. This is a volunteer day for them and the ones who show up know the importance of the day,” Gutierrez said.
