AARP TaxAide is providing free tax service at the Chula Vista Civic Library every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until April 14. Those requesting help must go to the library to make an appointment. Appointments are generally made within the next two days at this time. Services include filing both federal and state tax returns, filing them electronically and giving participants copies of their returns before they leave. They can also prepare taxes up to three years back to 2018.
AARP TaxAide local coordinator and Chula Vista resident Seme Newlin said that they do not discriminate against income, but the emphasis of the program is to help low income and senior citizens.
“We will do taxes for anyone,” she said. “We discourage people that make more than $100,000 and suggest that they go to a paid preparer.”
Newlin said they do Schedule A, a small company, and self-employment, taxes with bonds and stocks, and more, but they do not do any taxes that have depreciation, rental income, married filing separately, and out of state returns.
“AARP TaxAide is all volunteers. None of us our paid,” she said. “None of the volunteers that are preparing taxes are paid. We must pass three tax exams each year, one about conduct and confidentiality, then intake sheets, and the last one is and two day advanced tax class to refresh and learn about new tax laws and new software.”
