On Sept. 11, 2001 four commercial airplanes were hijacked by Islamic fundamentalist terrorists on the east coast. One of those planes, American Airlines Flight 11, was flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York at approximately 8:45 a.m. EST. Less than 30 minutes later United Airlines Flight 175 was flown into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
At approximately 9:37 a.m. American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the United States Pentagon.
A fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field at 10:03 a.m. in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, presumably en route to Washington D.C.
By the end of the morning the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center had collapsed. A total of 2,996 people died as a result of the terror attacks.
In 2002 a Tribute in Light art project was installed to represent the Twin Towers. The lights
have been illuminated Sept. 11 every year since to commemorate the attacks on the World Trade Center.
Across the country cities and communities host their own ceremonies and memorials.
In Chula Vista the Chula Vista Police Department is hosting a $150 per ticket fundraiser.

In National City an online 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony is planned from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m..
Hosted by the National City Fire Department, the National City Police Department and Fire Fighters Local 2744, the event will be livestreamed on the city of National City and the National City FireFighters Local 2744 Facebook pages.
The event’s guest speaker is Brennan Savage, a retired New York Fire Department firefighter.
The USS Midway Museum at Navy Pier will be the site of a ceremony that includes honor guards, Presentation of Colors, pipes and drums, Tolling of the Bells, a 21-gun salute and a fireboat water display.
