Road rage case in jury phase

Jury selection began Tuesday in the murder trial of a driver suspected of killing another driver in a road rage homicide in Chula Vista.

Attorneys in the case of Rickey Vernon Smith, 60, met Monday for motions before Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Garry Haehnle. Smith is accused of fatally stabbing Horace Vernon Williams, Jr. 36, on Nov. 27, 2018.

Opening statements and testimony were expected to begin this week. A dispute between the two drivers began in National City and ended after Williams crashed into the back of Smith’s truck near the Chula Vista Golf Course around 9 a.m. on Sweetwater Road at Willows Street.

Smith got out of his truck and allegedly stabbed Williams in his driver’s seat 6-7 times. Witnesses said there was some type of traffic dispute between the two drivers. Smith remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility on $2 million bail.
