While driving south on Broadway toward Main Street, I spotted a vertical business flag flapping just off the sidewalk in front of a really dated strip mall. The flag read Pizzeria el Jefe, which immediately piqued my interest.
Weeks later I finally made the stop to try out this pizzeria.
The pizzeria looks very meager from the parking lot — not the most attractive signage, which I’m sure is the best that can be done on such an old building. Upon walking inside I was pleasantly surprised: the space boasts a large mural and so much color, faux brick and faux living wall. The space is very reflective of the shop’s vibrant pizza selections.
The menu, displayed on monitors, is absolutely mouthwatering. Talk about favorite Mexican flavors on a pizza!
Me Gustan Tus Piñas pizza is topped with delicious adobada, fresh pineapple, red onion and fresh jalapeños. Other favorites include Mar y Tierra (shrimp, bistec, avocado) and Dame Tu Maiz Picoso (rajas peppers, grilled corn over a spicy cream sauce).
All pizzas come paired with different salsas to drizzle over the top.
While there’s room for improvement on the pizza crust, I very much enjoy the Mexican pizza concept. The toppings are all very fresh, the meats cooked well and very delicious, and salsas are flavorful as well as give a balanced kick of heat to the pizzas.
The price point for these large gourmet-style pizzas is about $16 each. Be sure to order ahead, as they are made to order and can take up to 20 to 25 minutes.
Pizzeria el Jefe is located at 1655 Broadway, Chula Vista. Business hours are noon to 9:30 p.m. daily. Call (619) 591-9686 or visit www.pizzeriaeljefe.com for information.
