CIF division softball finals set this weekend at UC San Diego

The San Diego Section’s 2017 softball playoffs will come to fruition this weekend with divisional championship games at UC San Diego.

The Division V (5 p.m.) and Division I (7:30 p.m.) title games are scheduled Friday, May 26.

This year’s CIF playoffs will culminate with four divisional finals on Saturday, May 27. The Division IV final is scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. start, followed by the Division III final at 2 p.m., the Division II final at 4:30 p.m. and the Open Division final at 7 p.m.

As of Thursday, two Metro Conference teams — second-seeded Eastlake in Division I and ninth-seeded Castle Park in Division V — were still in contention.

Both teams advanced to Thursday’s double-elimination semifinals in their respective divisions — Eastlake (17-10) against top-seeded Patrick Henry (22-9) and Castle Park (9-15) against top-seeded Classical Academy (14-8).

Mesa League champion Mater Dei Catholic (23-8) advanced as far as Tuesday’s Open Division quarterfinals while South Bay League champion Mar Vista (22-9) advanced as far as Tuesday’s Division IV quarterfinals.

South Bay League runner-up Southwest (19-11) also advanced as far as Tuesday’s Division IV quarterfinals.

Castle Park topped third-seeded Borrego Springs, 7-3, in Tuesday’s elimination game to remain in the challenger bracket.
Eastlake beat sixth-seeded Carlsbad, 6-1, last Saturday to advance.

Eastlake lost, 4-1, in Thursday’s match-up against Patrick Henry that sent the Lady Patriots through to Friday’s division final. Eastlake then engaged Carslbad in the challenger bracket final, coming up short 16-15 to suffer playoff elimination.

Patrick Henry will meet Carlsbad for the Division I title.

Castle Park lost, 8-2, to Classical Academy in Thursday’s challenger bracket semifinal to end its season.
