Suspect admits discharging gun

A man accused of firing numerous gunshots in Bonita pleaded guilty Dec. 5 to negligent discharge of a firearm and to delaying a police officer.

Deputy District Attorney Vincent Chen said Salvador Barajas, 25, is expected to receive two years in prison when he is sentenced on Jan. 22 in Chula Vista Superior Court.
Barajas pleaded guilty just before witnesses were to be called in a preliminary hearing about the Oct. 28 incident that occurred at 3:55 a.m. in the 5400 block of Robinwood Road in Bonita. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found shell casings and live rounds in a driveway.

They detained nine residents and conducted a security sweep of one house. During that time, deputies heard approximately 10 more shots fired. They continued searching for the gunman and saw a man fleeing on foot along a trail parallel to State Route 54.
Chula Vista and San Diego Police officers assisted and established a perimeter. They found Barajas as well as a firearm and a magazine. No one was injured although Barajas was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation before being booked into jail.
