The Metro Conference will be fairly well represented once again at this Saturday’s San Diego Section track and field championship meet at Mt. Carmel High School.
Competition starts at 10 a.m.
Teams and individuals will be competing for top marks and awards in both the Division I and Division II fields. They will also be competing for berths in next weekend’s elite state championship meet in Clovis.
The top three place-finishers in each event in state qualifying heats, plus those who meet a predetermined standard, advance beyond the section finals.
Only marks turned in during the meet will count toward state qualifying. Season bests do not count other than for rankings purposes.

Who to watch among South County qualifiers:
Sprints
Olympian High School has three entries in the Division I girls 100-meter dash finals. Senior Kolumbia Page recorded the top qualifying time of 12.31 at last Saturday’s prelim meet while classmates Alyssa Meeks (12.44) and Alexis Meeks (12.51) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Olympian’s Page (second, 25.02), Noble (third, 25.43) and Alyssa Meeks (ninth, 25.94) join Eastlake senior Saisha Banks (fifth, 25.50) in the Division I girls 200 dash finals.
Olympian junior Adaeze Noble finished second overall in the Division I girls 400 dash with a time of 57.85 while Eastlake junior Ana Mercado was fourth overall in 58.29.
Otay Ranch senior Alani Johnson finished fourth in prelim qualifying in the Division I girls 100 hurldes with a time of 15.43. She also advanced to the girls triple jump finals with a mark of 35-3.75 (fourth overall).
San Ysidro senior Jake Curtis finished second in the Division I boys 200 dash (22.02) and third in the boys 100 dash (10.82) while Olympian senior Mikael Tyler finished sixth in the boys 400 dash in 50.43 and tied for seventh in the 200 dash (22.58).
Olympian senior David Derby finished ninth in the boys 100 dash (11.14) to also advance.
Castle Park senior Chris Arana, the male track athlete of the meet at this year’s South Bay League finals, finished ninth in both the Division II boys 100 dash (11.09) and 200 dash (22.78).
Montgomery junior Adam Ibarra finished eighth in the Division II boys 400 dash in 50.64.
Distances
All eyes will be on Eastlake sophomore Patricia Miessner and Bonita Vista senior Isaiah Labra as they attempt to qualify in both gender races for the 3200-meter run.
Labra posted the second-fastest qualifying time in the Division I boys 3200 race in 9:22.00, just a second off the leader, Mission Hills junior Jonathan Velasco (9:20.54).
Miessner recorded the top qualifying time in the girls 1600 run (5:08.02) and finished second overall in the 3200 prelims in 10:51.80.
Miessner finished a second behind top qualifier Carlie Dorostkar, a sophomore from Canyon Crest Academy, in the 3200.
Olympian freshman Keerstin Augustin posted a time of 5:14.96 to finish sixth overall in prelim qualifying to also advance to the finals in the 1600 event. Eastlake junior Luz Mercado finished 10th with a prelim time of 5:16.55 to also qualify for the finals.
Mercado (seventh, 2:22.01) and Augustin (eighth, 2:22.18) also qualified for the Division I girls 800 finals.
Olympian senior Nicholas Albro (third, 4:26.54) and Bonita Vista senior Toshin Agbede (fifth, 4:27.72) both qualified in the Division I boys 1600 run.
Eastlake senior Jeffrey Page finished second in the Division I boys 800 with a time of 1:57.42 while San Ysidro senior Victor Raygoza was fifth in 1:57.99.
Southwest senior Jacob Fierro qualified to compete in both the 800 and 1600 running events in the Division II finals after placing third overall in the boys 800 run in 1:57.63 and seventh in the 1600 run in 4:25.09.
High Tech High Chula Vista sophomore Drake Prince finished fifth overall in prelim qualifying in the 800 run in 1:58.13 while Southwest junior Esteban Magana qualified 10th in the boys 1600 run in 4:27.58.
Relays
Olympian notched the top qualifying time in the Division I girls 4×100 relay (48.18) and the second-fastest qualifying time in the Division I girls 4×400 relay (3:55.35). Eastlake also qualified to compete in this weekend’s finals in the 4×400 relay after posting the fifth-best qualifying time (4:03.47).
Olympian posted the second-fastest time in the Division I boys 4×400 relay (3:24.77) and third-fastest qualifying time in the 4×100 relay (43.18).
Eastlake advanced in the 4×100 relay with a time of 43.29 (fifth overall) as did Otay Ranch with a time of 43.68 (ninth in the field).
Field events
Eastlake senior Jalyn Jackson recorded the top prelim marks in both the Division I boys triple jump (47-7.5) and long jump (23-9.5). He’ll be joined in the finals by teammate Kevin Bateman, who placed sixth in the field with a mark of 42-10.5.
Otay Ranch senior Zeek Cruz recorded the third-best mark in the Division I long jump (21-5.5) to qualify for this weekend’s finals.
Otay Ranch has two qualifiers in the Division I boys discus throw finals: senior Faufano Autele (141-4, fourth in the prelims) and junior Cameron Galloway (136-1, eighth).
The Metro Conference has three qualifiers in the Division I boys high jump: Sweetwater freshman Steven Aviles (6-0), Eastlake junior Kevin Bateman (5-10) and Olympian senior Adriane Rodriguez (5-10).
Eastlake senior Cimone Manson made the cut in the Division I girls triple jump and long jump events, placing seventh overall in the triple jump with a mark of 34-4.5 and ninth overall in the long jump with a mark of 16-0.25.
Chula Vista senior Ajahnei West, the female field athlete of the meet at the Mesa League finals, made the prelim cut in the Division I girls shot put with a put of 34-4.
Eastlake sophomore Kalah Bateman (4-8, tied for seventh) and Bonita Vista freshman Kayal Reyante (4-8, tied for 11th) both advanced to the Division I girls high jump finals.
Reyante also qualified to compete in the triple jump (34-1.75, ninth overall).
Mater Dei Catholic senior Gustavo Carranza, the male field athlete of the meet at this year’s South Bay League finals, qualified for this weekend’s final in two events: the Division II boys long jump and triple jump. He finished fifth in prelim qualifying in the triple jump (43-6) and sixth in the long jump (22-2.5).
Southwest senior Keyshawn Smith (fifth, 22-3) also qualified for the Division II boys long jump finals.
Mater Dei Catholic junior Paola Nenninger, the female field athlete of the meet at the South Bay League finals, finished fourth overall in the Division II girls triple jump (35-11) and eighth overall in the girls long jump (16-5.25) to qualify in both events for this weekend’s finals.
Castle Park junior Natoya Davis finished eighth overall in qualifying in the Division II girls shot put (33-3.5) to advance.
