Suspect in shooting death denied bail

A judge declined to set any bail Monday for Robert Alan Garduno, 27, who is charged with killing a young man in National City.

National City Police arrested Garduno on March 28 following the shooting death of a 26-year-old man who has not yet been publicly identified. Some news agencies described the situation as a drive-by shooting.

The young man was killed around 11 a.m. in the 800 block of Eta Street near Highland Avenue in National City. Police responded to radio calls of a shooting and found the victim’s body lying on a grassy strip beside trees outside the Park Villas apartments.
Paramedics were called to the scene, but the victim could not be revived. Police did not give any details about why Garduno was arrested or if he knew the victim. An officer said the 11 a.m. shooting time was unusual.

Garduno pleaded not guilty to a murder charge and a Chula Vista Superior Court judge declined to set any bail for him. A preliminary hearing was set for May 24, and a status conference on April 10.

Garduno remains in the central jail in downtown San Diego.
