Man can’t contact his wife

A Bonita man has been released from jail for domestic violence against his wife after being sentenced to spend 240 days in a drug rehab program.

James Kang, 29, received credit for serving 129 days in jail from Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Garry Haehnle. He was placed on three years probation.

Kang’s wife escaped their apartment in the 2900 block of Briarwood Road in Bonita on March 23 with injuries. Sheriff’s deputies arrived, but Kang refused to come out, saying he had taped knives to the back of the front door.
A sheriff’s SWAT team responded and talked on and off with him for about three hours. Kang displayed several knives during the standoff. The team eventually shot tear gas into the apartment and he surrendered.

Kang pleaded guilty to committing domestic violence, attempting to dissuade his wife from reporting a crime and resisting an officer. He was ordered to attend a domestic violence education class once a week for a year.
Kang has also been barred from contacting his wife as part of a restraining order.
