Coming off the success of its first year, the second annual South Bayfront Powwow will take place this weekend in Chula Vista.
“We asked the port for a grant and they gave us a grant last year and it was so successful we decided to do it again this year,” said event coordinator Susan Johnson.
Johnson said the public should expect to find the same sort of events as there were last year.
“Powwows are pretty traditional,” Johnson said. “Powwows are powwows, so it will be similar to last year’s.”
However, one notable difference is this year’s powwow will have more dancers and drums than last year, Johnson said.
Kicking off the event will be a blessing of the field where Native American drummers will make appear in their regalia.
“The regalia are very important things, they tell a lot about what tribe people come from and who they are,” Johnson said.
A grand entry parade, featuring powwow participants is to take place during the day, however visitors won’t be allowed to take pictures because of the event’s sacred nature.
A powwow brings together different Native American tribes such as the participating Kumeyaay, Cherokee, Yaqui and Aztec.
The Port of San Diego funded $5,000 for the event, which was used to pay for portable bathrooms.
The event is also sponsored by South Bayfront Artists.
The free two-day event is Aug. 10 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Aug. 11 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Bayside Park at J street.
Parking is also free to the public.
