Despite the season-ending injury suffered by two-way standout Asante Gibson the previous week, the Olympian Eagles continued to soar as quarterback Cobrin Humphrey threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more to spark the hosts to a 42-7 non-league victory against Mater Dei Catholic.
“The last time we played them, they hammered us (49-0 in 2007),” Olympian coach Gil Warren said prior to last Friday’s gridiron battle.”That was an eye-opener. We were just getting our program going.”
Payback was sweet. The Eagles led 14-0 after the opening quarter and 28-0 at halftime.
Humphrey completed four of six aerial attempts for 104 yards and TD strikes to Justin Gaskin and Dre Gibson. Gibson finished the game with two touchdowns after also scoring on a rushing play.
Olympian continued its relentless assault on the ground by rushing 28 times for 216 yards. Humphrey had three carries for 54 yards, including one dazzling 61-yard scamper for a score, while Gibson rushed four times for 47 yards, Akeem Foxworth had two carries for 36 yards and Devon Flores had three rushes for 29 yards.
Steven Exum led the Eagles with 48 yards (on one catch) while Alex Cornist had one reception for 32 yards.
Cornist also had a 41-yard kick-off return and a 23-yard punt return besides also scoring on a rushing play.
Jovan Gonzalez had six PAT conversions.
At 4-1, Olympian is one of five teams in Division IV with four wins or better. The Eagles host San Ysidro (1-4) on Friday. The Cougars dropped a 49-14 non-league contest at Santana (4-1-1) in their last outing on Oct. 1.
