South Coast Mustangs making a splash in women’s water polo

The South Coast Mustangs Water Polo Club, formerly Mustang Water Polo, is fielding a women’s all-star team that will compete during the spring club season. The club is open to those interested in learning, training and competing, ages 12 through 18 as well as a Masters Division. Club practices are weekly at Mt. Miguel High School. The Mustangs competed in the San Diego Water Polo Club Women’s Open at Mesa College on March 24.

Current South Bay players and alumni who represented the club at the tournament included Andrea Alexander (Bonita Vista), Josie Fialko (Bonita Vista), Sophie Fialko (Bonita Vista), Lauren Broyles (Bonita Vista), Rory Broyles (Bonita Vista), Bailey Garcia (Bonita Vista), Natsumi Watanabe (Eastlake), Sarah Medina (Otay Ranch), Emma Cornwell (Otay Ranch), Monica Salcedo (Otay Ranch), Gabby Nunez (Otay Ranch), Paola Vizcarra (Hilltop) and Irene Ramos (Hilltop).

The South Coast club finished 1-2 with a 12-2 victory against Waterdog and losses to the OMBAC Kittens (10-5) and Middleburry Connecticut College (10-9). Goal leaders included Medina with six, Ramos with five and Alexander and Lauren Broyles with four each. Vizcarra scored two goals while Sophie Fialko and Watanabe each scored once.

The Kittens, a 20-and-older club, won the tournament, followed by UCSD Sunset (second), Middleburry College (third), South Coast Mustangs (fourth), OMBAC (30-and-older) Cougars (fifth), San Diego Mesa (sixth) and Waterdog (seventh).
