Sweetwater rolls past Imperial, posts 24-6 victory to move to 3-0

Vista Spartans in the longest-running high school football rivalry game in San Diego County history on Friday, Sept. 19. The Devils lead the series 36-28-3 and, despite losing last year’s match-up by a score of 27-0, would like to think the momentum is shifting to their side again after a recent resurgence by the Spartans.

Kick-off is 7 p.m.

Sweetwater improved to 3-0 on the season after defeating the visiting Imperial Tigers, 24-6, last Friday.

Antonio Garcia rushed for 180 yards and scored one touchdown on a 56-yard burst from the line of scrimmage while teammate Raven Middleton scored two touchdowns — one on a 21-yard run and another on a 44-yard pass completion from Cecilio Portillo.

Matt Marshall recorded a two-point safety on defense while James Zarate scored on a two-point conversion to also boost the Devils. Ricardo Perez rounded out scoring for the winners with two extra-point conversions.

Sweetwater, which led 17-0 at halftime, amassed 418 rushing yards in the game. Portillo had 69 yards on six carries while Middleton had 66 yards on 10 carries and Zarate had 58 yards on 10 carries.

The Devil defense collected three sacks. Portillo led the team with nine total tackles, including seven solo stops, while Marshall had total tackles.

On the season, Garcia has rushed for 299 yards and leads the team with four touchdowns (three rushing and one on a kick-off return). Teammates Andrew Wright and Middleton each have three TDs.
