O’s Bowl match-up pits Otay Ranch, Olympian in Metro-Mesa opener

The third annual O’s Bowl match-up between east side rivals Otay Ranch and Olympian doubles as the teams’ Metro-Mesa League opener. Kick-off is 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at Olympian High School.

The visiting Mustangs enter the game with a 4-2 overall record after defeating the visiting Hilltop Lancers, 44-13, last Friday in non-league action to snap a two-game losing streak.

The host Eagles are 2-3 following last Friday’s 36-7 non-league loss at Hoover. Olympian will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak after opening the season 2-0.

Otay Ranch led Hilltop, 23-0, at halftime. The Mustangs recorded a safety in the first quarter and tacked on three touchdowns in the second quarter. The Lancers, playing without starting quarterback Daniel Sanchez due to an injury, dropped to 2-4 with the loss.

Dorsey Furlow scored on two long runs while Adrian Rodriguez scored on a punt return and TD catch to help power Otay Ranch. Furlow is averaging 74.5 rushing yards per game while Rodriguez is averaging 19.25 yards per catch and 96.25 receiving yards per game. As a team, the Mustangs are averaging 120.3 rushing yards per game while quarterback Arturo Saenz is averaging 110.0 passing yards per game.

Olympian trailed Hoover (3-2) by a 29-0 margin before getting on the scoreboard via a fourth quarter touchdown. In statistics posted through four games, Eagles quarterback Gary Cannon had rolled up 541 yards in total offense — 275 yards passing and 266 yards rushing. Defensively, Bradley Erickson had racked up 50 tackles, including 34 solo stops, while Marcelo Knox had recorded six sacks.

Olympian leads the teams’ fledgling O’s Bowl series 2-0. The Eagles defeated the Mustangs 37-14 last season. In the teams’ first meeting for the trophy in 2012, the Eagles won 34-20.
