Bonitafest parade’s glowing replacement

The show goes on.  Bonita’s long-standing tradition is alive this weekend.

Today at about 5:30, is the Bonita Twilight Trail at the Bonita Golf Course where attendees are expected to light up the night sky with glow sticks and flashlights around the 3.1 miles of the walking trail outside the golf course.
Southwestern College journalism professor Max Branscomb, who spearheaded an effort to revive the near death

Bonitafest, said this year’s Twilight trail is the parade portion of Bonitafest.

Although there won’t be any floats or people parachuting in, Branscomb said the parade will go back to its roots in honoring Bonita.

“It’s going to be a very Bonita parade,” he said. “We want everybody to come out and have a good time and just celebrate Bonita.”

Branscomb said the parade is going to be part vigil, part marching and part electric light show.

“We want it to be visual and fun,” Branscomb said.

Branscomb said the only costs associated with the parade are for insurance and golf carts, which will be used to drive local dignitaries around.

Branscomb said the parade is an integral part of Bonitafest and that almost every Bonitafest had a parade.

Because of limited funding, time and resources Branscomb said the parade couldn’t take place on Bonita Road like it had in year’s past.

“I kind of want to see from our community to see how interested they are in saving it,” he said. “This is kind of their chance to come and vote with their feet so to speak.

The following day, Sept.13 is the Bonitafest street fair on the campus of Bonita Vista High School. Events start at 10 a.m.

Branscomb’s melodrama ends Bonitafest and will run at 7 p.m. Sept. 24-27 at Sweetwater Community Church at 5305 Sweetwater Road.

“I think it’s going to be a lot better than people  are expecting.”

Branscomb said about 60 vendors will be present at the street fair.

Performing Arts group groups and bands from several high schools in the Sweetwater Union High School District will provide live musical entertainment.

As far as the whole show, it is going to be our high school students from the Sweetwater district,” he said.
