2023 Metro Conference Spring Sports Awards

Check all the boxes — the Otay Ranch High School softball team is currently on a streak of three San Diego Section divisional championships.

Time flies, but not the memories.

The Lady Mustangs captured the Division II title in 2021 and the Open Division championship the following year. Otay Ranch out-maneuvered Metro-Mesa League rival Mater Dei Catholic, 4-3, to win this spring’s Division I banner.

The Lady Mustangs topped off this season of plenty with a trip to the Southern California regional playoffs, reaching the Division III championship game with a runner-up finish to second-seeded Fullerton.

Head coach Jorge Vargas said his team accomplished its latest feat despite a talent drain due to graduation.

“We lost about seven seniors, including Maya Loper, who was the pitcher of the year last year,” Vargas noted. “Nobody really expected anything from us this year, but I knew we had a special bunch of girls. We made it to the final in D3 states but came up short.

“We have an amazing coaching staff as well. Coach Nicky Meyer-Sandez does an amazing job with our pitchers and catchers. She actually pitched for the Mexican National team and SDSU, so she has done it at the highest level. Also, Coach Josh Phillips has years of travel ball experience. We were led by our junior and sophomore classes, so we should be verry good next year as well.”

Otay Ranch, which finished with a final 24-8 record (5-1 in league play as Metro-Mesa champions), had eight players selected to the 2023 All-Mesa League team: Alexa Muñoz, Nat Lozano, Itzel Soto and Isabel Cintron, all on the first team, and Isa Vinluan, Vivi Vargas, Kaylin Phillips and Victoria Resendez, all on the second team.

Lozano was voted Metro-Mesa League Player of the Year while Muñoz voted Metro-Mesa League Pitcher of the Year

Muñoz and Lozano also made all CIF first team.

Names of the games
A total of 570 names were printed on all-league certificates handed out at this year’s spring sports award ceremony at Eastlake High School.

It was a banner year for Metro Conference teams in more ways than one as Eastlake’s boys volleyball team captured the Division II championship to go with Otay Ranch’s Division I girls softball title.

Additionally, Eastlake finished runner-up in the Open Division baseball championship game while San Ysidro placed runner-up in the Division III girls lacrosse final.

Eastlake sophomore Zane Johnson (boys swimming) and San Ysidro senior Andres Sanchez (boys diving) both competed at the state championship meet May 11-13 in Clovis. Johnson placed eighth in the 100-yard butterfly (48.75) Sanchez while 11th placed with 501.85 points in the 28-deep diving card.

Medals were awarded to the top nine place-winners in each event at this year’s state track and field championship meet May 19-20 in Clovis.

Eastlake freshman Jaelyn Williams stole the show with a fourth-place medal in the girls 3200 run (10:11.01). She would go on to compete at the showcase Nike Outdoor Nationals June 15-18 at the University of Oregon, placing seventh in the 3000 run (9:36.12) and eighth in the two-mile event (10:28.92).

The Metro Conference awards ceremony featured trophies and certificates for spring athletes of the year at each school, scholar-athletes of the year for each school and all-league teams and players of the year for each sport.

Metro Conference boys tennis season is a slam for Otay duo

The 2023 spring boys tennis season proved highly successful for Metro Conference teams and especially so for Metro Conference individuals.

Eastlake emerged as this year’s Metro-Mesa League champions. “No team in league came close to beating them,” Otay Ranch coach Dan Woodard said.

The San Diego Section team playoffs took place April 18-22, with finals at the Barnes Tennis Center.

Eastlake (third seed) and Bonita Vista (12th seed) were included in the Division I field while Mater Dei Catholic (ninth seed), Olympian (10th seed) and Otay Ranch (11th seed) were included in the Division II field. Montgomery received the No. 9 seed in the Division III bracket.

Eastlake advanced to the Division I semifinals with wins over 14th-seeded San Dieguito Academy (14-4 in the first round) and 11th-seeded San Diego (9-9. 75-74 in games in the quarterfinals). The Titans ended their playoff run with a 10-8 loss to second-seeded Santana, the eventual division champion.

Bonita Vista lost, 11-7, to fifth-seeded San Marcos in the opening round.

Mater Dei Catholic advanced to the Division II semifinals following wins over eighth-seeded Mission Hills (10-8 in the first round) and top-seeded University City (10-8 in the quarterfinals). The Crusaders ended their season with a tiebreaker loss to fifth-seeded Steele Canyon (9-9, 76-70 in games), the eventual division champion.

Otay Ranch was involved in two tiebreaker decisions. The Mustangs edged sixth-seeded Valhalla, 73-59 in games following a 9-9 standoff in the first round and lost a tiebreaker 65-63 in games to third-seeded Francis Parker in the quarterfinals following another 9-9 deadlock.

Olympian ended its season with a 12-6 loss to seventh-seeded Coronado in the first round.

Montgomery lost, 13-5, to eighth-seeded Rancho Buena Vista in the opening round.

In the Mesa League individual tournament, Bonita Vista senior Matthew Garrido captured the singles title while Otay Ranch senior Marlon “M.J.” Abarca and his freshman brother Adrien “A.J.” Abarca won the Mesa doubles title.

The league’s coaches voted M.J Abarca player of the year for the second consecutive year.

That was just the beginning of the brothers’ honor roll as they went on to become CIF doubles champions.

It marked M.J. Abarca’s second CIF championship after winning the mixed doubles championship as a sophomore with Emely Valencia, the 2022 fall individual girls runner-up.

During Abarca’s three years of tennis, he was a Mesa League champion in all three divisions: mixed doubles as sophomore, singles as a junior and doubles this year. His freshman season was cut short because of the COVID pandemic.
