20 years for man in matricide case

A Chula Vista man was sentenced Tuesday to 16 years to life in prison for killing his mother in 2008 plus four years consecutively for obstructing a police officer in an earlier encounter.

The total term of 20 years to life was handed down to George Moises Ramos, 47, by Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Edward Allard III. The judge also ordered Ramos to pay $7,500 for the funeral of Francisca Ramos, 77.

Ramos lived with his mother on Tamarack Court near Olive Avenue in Chula Vista when she was stabbed to death on Oct. 25, 2008. He received 15 years to life for his guilty plea to second-degree murder plus one year additionally for using a knife as a deadly weapon.

Allard ordered a total restitution figure of $8,515 which includes the funeral and other costs that were paid by the crime victims’ compensation fund, said Deputy District Attorney Enrique Camarena. Ramos received jail credits of serving 482 days.

Through his attorney, Jesus Romero, Ramos said he was sorry for what he had done. His brother also spoke and other family members were present.

On Sept. 8, 2008, a Chula Vista police officer was slightly injured by Ramos in a visit to the home. Ramos was charged with felony assault and he pleaded guilty to obstructing an executive officer. Ramos was also charged with being under the influence of methamphetamine a week later, but that misdemeanor offense was later dismissed, according to court records.

One of the victim’s daughters found her mother’s body around 5:45 p.m. and called police on Oct. 25, 2008. A broken broomstick was found on the floor.

Ramos was quoted at the time as saying his deceased father had “come to him” in some way and told him to “send her to him” in heaven, according to testimony in the preliminary hearing in 2009. Ramos was attempting to leave the residence before Chula Vista Police officers arrested him.

If Ramos gets a job in prison, part of his wages will be used to pay the restitution figure. If someone puts money on his account, some of that will be used towards the restitution.
